** Circles Ashland apologizes for any perception or unforeseen inference that we condone, uphold, perpetuate, or support offending any group, culture, or community member. The Board, Center Of The Universe Brewery (COTU) owner Chris Ray, and Circles Ashland staff were unaware of the historical background associated with the phrase "circle the wagons." We realize that while the offense was unintentional, if left unheeded the unintended consequences could be detrimental to our posture and position on intentional inclusion. The inference is not only diametrically opposed to our steadfast work and commitment; it is out of step with our vision. In fact, one of our organizational guiding principles reflects the belief that "we intentionally create and nurture a community of care that results in life-long friendships through food, friendship, and fellowship."

COTU has been tremendously supportive of Circles Ashland and its mission to transgress marginalization. Neither party would do anything willfully hurtful or harmful. Moving forward, COTU and Circles Ashland are on one accord—all parties have agreed to revamp the "circle the wagons" theme and to rename the event. In addition, we will use our available resources to take a stand and facilitate a conversation.

In that vein, the Circles Ashland Board recently agreed to launch a community based diversity, equity, and inclusion effort. More information will be provided and you, our Ashland/Hanover community, are invited to join us and to participate in these efforts.
